Support for study to identify Onslow's future accommodation needs
3/7/96
A study to identify Onslow's future accommodation needs will proceed with support from the State Government.
In Onslow today, Regional Development Minister Hendy Cowan announced that the Shire of Ashburton would receive $4000 towards the cost of the study.
The money would be made available under the Small Town Economic Planning program (STEP), which is administered by the Department of Commerce and Trade.
STEP is aimed at encouraging and enabling smaller communities to pursue economic development by identifying and using their human, physical and financial resources. The process involves the community itself, all levels of government and business.
The Onslow accommodation study is a key part of the town's Community Economic Development Plan, which was officially launched by the Minister today. The plan was developed by the community-based Onslow Reference Group.
The plan focuses on a number of areas with potential for development - including tourism, transport, marine facilities, housing and land - which can benefit the whole community.
"The Onslow community is planning in a positive way for the future, as evidenced by the preparation of this new development plan," Mr Cowan said.
"The area has strong tourism credentials and the potential to build on its role as a service centre for the offshore resources industry.
"However in order to build on its strengths, and to diversify its economic base, an accurate picture of accommodation requirements will be necessary.
"The STEP grant will enable a consultant to examine tourist, business and domestic accommodation options, which in turn will assist the shire and community in their future planning.
"It will also allow Onslow to market the type of accommodation appropriate to the town so as to target potential investors."
Mr Cowan commended the Shire of Ashburton and the Pilbara Development Commission for its input into the Community Economic Development Plan.
