Rig operations north of Exmouth legitimate

Mines Minister George Cash said today a rig located approximately 40 kilometres north of Exmouth was undertaking legitimate and safe offshore drilling for gas.

Mr Cash said the rig, operated by SEDCO for BHP Pty Ltd, began drilling 12 days ago.

"Drilling is taking place in Commonwealth waters," he said.

"A significant gas discovery was made in the area by BHP'S West Muiron 3 well in October last year.

"This well, West Muiron 4, is part of the follow-up drilling program to that discovery.

"It is the fourth well to be drilled in the area, the first of which was drilled in 1972."

Mr Cash said approval for the drilling was granted on joint authority by the State and Federal Governments.

He said the current drilling program was subject to strict environmental conditions.
