Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, has lit the eternal Flame of Remembrance in a moving ceremony at Perth's Kings Park.
Premier Richard Court said the Flame of Remembrance would be a symbol of the honour and respect of all Western Australians for the State's servicemen and women.
"The project is an enduring testament to our veterans," Mr Court said.
The Flame of Remembrance is positioned in the centre of the Pool of Reflection, within the walls of the State War Memorial Precinct. It has four burners representing the Army, Navy, Air Force and Women's Services.
The pool includes water from the world's five oceans and the flame was brought to Perth from the Canberra War Memorial.
The flame is designed to burn continuously. Its burners are recessed to shelter the flame from strong winds and extreme weather.
Mr Court said the Flame of Remembrance was a permanent reminder to those who had maintained Australia's freedom.
"During times of peace in Australia it is difficult to comprehend the impact and devastation of war. It can be harder to appreciate the sacrifices made by the brave men and women who served our nation in times of conflict," Mr Court said.
"The Flame of Remembrance will give generations of Western Australians the opportunity to honour those who fought to defend our freedom and protect our way of life."
Mr Court said Kings Park was a fitting location for the memorial.
"Throughout the Park you will find the names of many of those who fell in battle. It is a place of dignity."
Mr Court said the Flame of Remembrance was the result of the efforts and support of the State Government, AlintaGas, the Department of Veterans' Affairs, the RSL and the Fremantle Football Club.
