8/11/95
Services Minister Kevin Minson today opened Melbourne-based computer company MITS' new Perth premises.
Mr Minson said MITS (WA) had considerable expertise in real-times systems, spatial system and in communications.
"These skills have enabled the company to win a number of Western Australian Government contracts against international competition," he said.
The Minister said the presence of MITS (WA) would provide more jobs for Western Australians in the information technology field ensuring technology dollars remained in the State rather than going off-shore.
Mr Minson said the rapidly expanding information technology industry in WA would benefit from the Coalition Government's contracting out policies.
"Government outsourcing provides not only opportunities for local firms to develop products and services to meet Government needs, but also supports and boosts local and Australian markets as well as facilitating expansion into overseas markets," he said.
MITS (WA) managing director Michael O'Donnell said the State's booming information technology market was helping launch a range of export industries in the area.
He said the State Government's outsourcing program was boosting the industry with major resource developments and projects creating WA-based technology with vast export potential.
"Experience in these sorts of projects is helping the company win contracts in the Philippines, China, Hawaii, Thailand and New Zealand," he said.
