Family and Children's Services Minister Cheryl Edwardes today announced a one-off payment to the Wanneroo Youth Accommodation Service.

Mrs Edwardes said the sum of $7,500 would assist in the continuation of the service's family mediation/reconciliation program.

The Ministry of Justice's Juvenile Justice Division is matching the payment to the Wanneroo Youth Service to assist with family mediation and emergency accommodation.

"The Wanneroo Youth Service provides a valuable role in the community," Mrs Edwardes said.

"The aim of the service is to assist members of families who may be experiencing conflict or potential conflict in their relationships, to develop the skills to form healthy relationships.

"Parent/adolescent conflict counselling is an important service. Sometimes skills have to be learnt by both parents and their children on how to deal with a conflict.

"The Wanneroo Youth Service aims to provide quality and caring support and advice in times of parent/adolescent strife so that issues can be resolved.

"In resolving the issues families are encouraged to stay together and adolescents are able to continue living at home and not in a situation where they may be at risk.

"Better relationships within families have an impact not only just in the home but also in the community.

"The Wanneroo Youth Service is to be commended for providing this service."

Ministry of Justice Juvenile Justice executive director David Northcott said the service provided an important support service in the northern suburbs.

"This service works in conjunction with the Juvenile Justice Teams and Juvenile Justice officers doing valuable work with youth in the area," Mr Northcott said.
