Official opening of Joondalup's Central Park

Stage One of Perth's newest urban parkland, Central Park in Joondalup, was officially opened today by Lands Minister George Cash.
Mr Cash described the five-hectare park, in the centre of Joondalup's business district, as one of the most important open space developments in Australia.
"The site is already gaining national attention as an outstanding example of urban parkland," he said.
"It provides a natural framework for the rapidly developing Joondalup CBD, and projects like the $80 million Lakeside Joondalup shopping city, the $16 million entertainment and cinema complex, law courts and the regional police station."
Developed at a cost of $2.7 million, Central Park links the city with Yellagonga Regional Park on the edge of Lake Joondalup.
Tract Consultants, which designed the park, made water a feature of the park with a 6,000 square metre lake, a watercourse and ponds decorated with bronze animal sculptures.
The watercourse has one pond featuring a mosaic tile bottom containing 3,600 jewel-coloured ceramic tiles, designed by Western Australian artists.
The park also features a boardwalk, walking trails, natural bushland and an open-grassed common.
Mr Cash said LandCorp developed Central Park in an environmentally sensitive way.
"When the land was cleared, the local community was invited to remove seedlings for replanting in Yellagonga Regional Park," he said.
"Blackboys found on site were placed in a nursery to be replanted in the park later and at other Joondalup landscaping programs."
Mr Cash said plans for Stage Two of the park, over two hectares, included a limestone amphitheatre.
