Broome and Derby will continue to be linked by a regular air service following an agreement between Transport, the Shire
of Derby-West Kimberley, Ansett and Skippers Aviation.
Announcing the new arrangement, Transport Minister Murray Criddle said that Perth charter operator Skippers Aviation would continue to operate their 19-seat Metro 23 aircraft between Broome and Derby six days per week.
"This has been an excellent example of cooperation between the stakeholders involved to ensure that the Derby community retains its air service at a very high standard," Mr Criddle said.
"The Shire of Derby-West Kimberley will increase the head tax at their airport by $10 per passenger which will help subsidise the air service.
"Transport will contribute $35,000 per annum, and Ansett Airlines will use $1,000 worth of air freight space per week.
"This arrangement will benefit Derby's economic growth and ability to attract future growth projects.
"It's most important, though, that the community of Derby supports this service because, unfortunately, subsidies can't be left in place indefinitely."
