MS Society receives lotteries funds for new premises

The Multiple Sclerosis Society's plan to build a new facility for people with multiple sclerosis has moved a step closer following a significant donation from the Lotteries Commission.
Presenting a cheque for $200,000, Disability Services Minister Paul Omodei said the society's new facility in Beechboro would provide services to almost 800 people with MS from the northern and eastern metropolitan regions.
"The new premises will house the society's Eastside and Northside Outreach groups and will be built on land donated to the society by the Shire of Swan," Mr Omodei said.
"Outreach centres provide crucial assistance to people with MS by allowing them to receive services from the society within their local communities.
"Importantly, they give people the chance to come together to support each other at a local level."
Mr Omodei said MS affected people - predominantly women - in the prime of their lives and while some continued with little disruption to their normal routines, the condition could have a devastating impact on the lives of others.
"Today, the society provides services to about 1,500 Western Australians which include accommodation, respite, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, massage, counselling and family support," he said.
"The new centre will help the society to deliver these services closer to home to more than half of its members, many of whom may experience mobility difficulties."
Mr Omodei praised the society for its efforts on behalf of people with MS, particularly for its role in raising community awareness of their special needs.
"The society has expanded its role beyond direct consumer care to encompass the broader aspects of community education, which benefits all people with disabilities," he said.
The Minister also congratulated the Lotteries Commission for its ongoing support to community-based organisations and projects.
"Each year, countless thousands of Western Australians benefit from this support, which allows organisations to improve their services, expand their client base and consequently, contribute to the development of our community," he said.
"WA is extremely fortunate to have access to this source of additional funding which has provided assistance to so many people."
