A new purpose-built outdoor area to provide shaded seating and a new learning facility has been officially opened at Floreat Park Primary School.
The $18,500 facility has been completed funded by the Floreat Park Parents and Citizens' Association with the help of fundraising efforts by students.
Opening the facility today, Education Minister Colin Barnett congratulated the school's community on its efforts to provide an important addition to the school.
"This is a major Parents and Citizens' project staged over several years and the Association deserves congratulations," Mr Barnett said.
"It shows a strong partnership that exists between the community and the school and the key role P&C Associations can play in promoting positive schools environments."
Floreat Park P&C raised $15,000 to build the learning area, with students and teachers contributing a further $3,500 by holding a school 'spellathon'.
Mr Barnett said that school Principal Brendan Walker proposed the project because the traditional 1950s design of the school made it difficult for teachers to move students to outside areas for activities that required space.
The new learning area, which will more effectively meet various student learning styles, can accommodate up to two classes of students for a wide range of activities.
Landscaping, seating and additional shade cover is expected to be complete by the end of the year.
