The Health Department's advertisement about the new smoking regulations has won an award for its creativity.
The newspaper advertisement 'Where you can-Where you can't' won the bronze award in this year's Public Service Print division of the Perth Art Directors' Club annual awards.
Health Minister John Day said it was a credit to the Health Department that it had created an advertisement that carried essential information in such a creative, striking way.
He said the advertisement, first published in February, advised people about new health regulations banning smoking in enclosed public places. It was part of a campaign that also reminded relevant owners and managers of their new responsibilities.
"For the advertisement to have attracted this national attention with positive feedback from 10 top Sydney and Melbourne agencies, clearly demonstrates that it has succeeded in conveying the message it set out to do," he said.
"I congratulate the department on winning the award, which was announced before 500 people at a presentation night at the Burswood last week."
Mr Day said the quality of the Quit television advertisement was also acknowledged, getting through to the finals of the awards' Public Service TV division.
"Most importantly, it has prompted thousands of calls to the Quitline and therefore possibly influenced those callers and others to make a quit attempt," he said.
"We will never know just how many lives this advertisement helps to save, but I am confident, from the good response to the Quit campaign, that it is indeed saving lives by influencing a number of people to stop their deadly habit."
There were 494 calls made to the Quitline during Quit Week - five times the average number of calls at other times.
There were 1,542 calls made to the Quitline over the seven-week campaign period - twice the number made in the seven weeks prior to the campaign.
