The Attorney General Peter Foss today announced the upgrading of the temporary minimum-security accommodation at Greenough Regional Prison to provide permanent accommodation for up to 36 prisoners.
"The benefits are twofold - improved facilities at Greenough and the release of the existing caravans for the highly successful and expanding work camps," Mr Foss said.
The existing temporary facility for up to 36 minimum-security prisoners was established outside the perimeter of the main prison early this year as a result of the unprecedented growth in the State's prison population.
"The upgrade will not change the number of prisoners accommodated or the cyclone fencing and razor wire which was put around the site at the request of the local residents," Mr Foss said.

"A local consultant will be appointed this week to prepare the specifications and documentation for the replacement of the former Main Roads work camp caravans.
"The caravans will be replaced with more permanent 'mining camp' style accommodation and there will be an upgrade of staff administration, health and dining facilities.
"As daily off-site employment is not available for all the prisoners, a vocational facility will provide meaningful employment for between six and 10 prisoners."
Site services including the effluent treatment plant will also be upgraded as necessary.
It is expected work will start in about 10 weeks and be completed by December as the caravans are progressively replaced.
Mr Foss said the caravans would be relocated and used in mobile work camps. The Government received 28 submissions from shires and community groups eager to benefit from the work camp scheme, which has already proved its worth to prisoners and local communities at Badgingarra and Walpole.
An announcement of those short-listed for a work camp is expected later in the month.
