A commercial marron farm being developed at a family farm in Nannup has been awarded a $7,818 grant from the State Government to help fund the cost of extending power supplies on the property.
The marron project is being developed by Tracie Bishop and Greg Craig of Camena Management, who also provide rigging, scaffolding, crane driving and school bus services in Nannup.
Marron farming is seen as a growth industry in Western Australia with potential in both domestic and overseas markets.
Regional Development Minister Hendy Cowan said the power upgrade at the farm was essential to operate aerators and pumps supplying oxygen to the marron ponds. However, the $10,424 price tag for the work was a major impediment to the project.
"It is unrealistic to expect a small enterprise to absorb this sort of cost on top of the substantial investment needed for new equipment and stock," Mr Cowan said.
"This is an innovative enterprise which will help diversify the local economy and enable Nannup to benefit from the opportunities associated with the marron industry. I am very pleased the Government has been able to provide this assistance."
The grant was awarded under the Regional Headworks Development Scheme, which is administered by the Department of Commerce and Trade. It represents 75 per cent of the total headworks cost.
The Regional Headworks Development Scheme was established by the State Government to assist regional businesses pay headworks charges associated with water, power, gas, sewerage, drainage and telecommunications establishment.
