Funding for Ravenhill Youth Accommodation Centre in Thornlie
4/3/97
The Ravenhill Youth Accommodation Centre in Thornlie has been guaranteed funding until mid-1998, Family and Children's Services Minister Rhonda Parker and Federal Family Services Minister Judi Moylan announced today.
This means the centre can continue to provide transitional accommodation and support for up to four homeless young people, between 15 and 20 years old, at a time.
"It is very important for young people without homes to have access to safe, secure accommodation so they can concentrate on evaluating their situations and making informed decisions about the future,' Mrs Parker said.
"This service provides a safe, supportive environment where they can find out about various services and options, work through their crises and develop essential social and living skills that will help them in daily life."
Family and Children's Services has granted the centre $80,482 a year until June 30,1998 under the Supported Accommodation Assistance Program (SAAP).
SAAP is funded by both the State and Commonwealth Governments to provide accommodation and support for homeless people in Western Australia. There are currently more than 100 SAAP services available in metropolitan, rural and remote areas throughout the state.
"The service provides valuable information, development opportunities and support for young people facing a crisis," Mrs Moylan said.
"The skills they develop should help them avoid similar situations in the future.
"This agreement demonstrates the Commonwealth and State Governments' commitment to strengthening families and providing support for homeless people of all ages."
