Jardamu Women's Safe House in Wyndham has been guaranteed funding of $150,000 a year until mid-1998 to continue to provide quality crisis accommodation and support services, Family and Children's Services Minister Rhonda Parker announced today.

"The grant will continue to enhance the quality of services provided to Aboriginal women and children who are experiencing domestic violence by providing vital safe accommodation," the Minister said.

"Workers at the safe house offer a range of support including information, advocacy, referrals, financial assistance, emotional support and general counselling to women and their children.

"The support services will enable Aboriginal women to increase their knowledge and skills so they can become more independent and self-determining and to help them avoid future crises."

The funding of Jardamu Women's Safe House has been transferred from the Ministry of Justice to Family and Children's Services after reinvestment of some of the savings from the closure of the Wyndham Regional Prison into core social programs.

"This funding demonstrates the State Government's continued commitment to assisting women with or without children to find crisis accommodation and make informed decisions and choices about their lives," Mrs Parker said.
