The heritage-listed former Fremantle Technical School, located in South Terrace opposite the Fremantle Markets, is now the home of a comprehensive training, career and employment information and referral centre for the rapidly expanding South Metropolitan College of TAFE.
Employment and Training Minister Graham Kierath said the new South Metro TAFE Info Centre would be a 'one-stop shop' to help the public navigate their way through the services offered across the college's six major campuses.
"South Metro TAFE's catchment area now extends through the south-western corridor including the fast-growing Peel Region," Mr Kierath said.
"There are now nearly 70,000 people living in Peel, and demand is increasing for vocational education and training services in the region.
"The South Metro TAFE Info Centre will save students a lot of time and energy as they explore the many options available to them through the college."
Murdoch University, which is involved in a number of partnerships with South Metro College of TAFE, is also represented at the info centre.
South Metro Student of the Year Michaela Ng assisted Mr Kierath in launching the info centre. Former student 73-year-old Wilma Baroy, who studied toward a skipper's qualification, was a guest speaker.
Mr Kierath said the former Fremantle Technical School was the perfect venue for the Info Centre.
"Within these walls, over the past century, many thousands of people have gained essential skills for life and work. It seems fitting that 100 years on, and for many years to come, thousands more will follow in their footsteps," he said.
