Premier Richard Court has today announced that Dr Syd Shea would be leaving his role as executive director of the Department of Conservation and Land Management (CALM).
Mr Court said the decision came at a time when significant changes were being undertaken in the management and conservation of the environment and Western Australia's forests - including the splitting of CALM.
"Given the changes that are taking place with the creation of the Department of Conservation and the Forest Products Commission, Dr Shea believed it was an appropriate time for him to move on," the Premier said.
Dr Shea will be moving to the Ministry of the Premier and Cabinet where he will be undertaking special duties relating to his extensive experience.
Mr Court said that during his 15 years with CALM, Dr Shea had served Governments from both sides of the political spectrum with distinction.
"Under Dr Shea's leadership there have been many successful initiatives, including 'Western Shield', which has brought a number of native animal species back from the brink of extinction, significant increases in the State's conservation estate, the creative programs to tackle salinity, increased development of timber plantations and successful eco-tourism projects such as the Tree Top Walk and work on the Bibbulman Track," the Premier said.
Mr Court said Dr Wally Cox had been appointed as acting executive director of CALM.
Dr Cox has a strong scientific and commercial background. He has previously served as chief executive officer of a number of Government agencies, including the Department of Regional Development and the North-West, the Water Authority, the East Perth and Subiaco Redevelopment authorities.
