WA National Party Leader and Commerce and Trade Minister Hendy Cowan has paid tribute to the work of the Hon. Tim Fischer, who announced today that he would step down as Deputy Prime Minister, Federal National Party Leader and Trade Minister from July 20.
Mr Cowan said that Mr Fischer had been an active and exceptionally enthusiastic advocate for Australian industry and had worked tirelessly to promote Australia's interests overseas.
"He has been our Trade Minister during a period of momentous global trade, economic and political change," Mr Cowan said.
"This has presented challenges to our primary producers and manufacturing sector but there is no doubt Mr Fischer was always focused on their long-term interests.
"His passion for regional Australia has helped lift the profile of the regions, which are often overlooked in Canberra."
Mr Cowan said that Mr Fischer had steered the Federal Parliamentary National Party through some difficult times, in particular when One Nation was trying to establish itself as a force in the lead-up to the last election.
"Tim brought a fresh approach and great sincerity to his various roles and I will miss dealing with him at a leadership and personal level," he said.
"I can appreciate his reasons for stepping down and wish him and his family well in the future."
