24/5/94
Transport Minister Eric Charlton today congratulated cyclist Rod Evans on his record-breaking ride over the weekend, describing the feat as inspirational.
"To set a world record in ultra-marathon cycle endurance racing is a remarkable achievement, but to break five existing world records is almost unbelievable," Mr Charlton said.
"The courage and dedication Rod's effort must have taken is outstanding and a fine example to all."
Rod Evans is manager of Bikewest, the Department of Transport agency responsible for implementing cyling policy.
"In his capacity as Bikewest manager, I have always been impressed by Rod's determination to achieve and he is to be congratulated on his efforts in the pursuit of excellence,"
Mr Charlton said.
"Of course, I am also proud that these records were set in Western Australia and that Rod Evans' name has been broadcast to the world.
"For a country with a small population, Australia has a long and proud record in terms of human achievements, inventiveness and creativity and Rod's success is a further acknowledgment of that."
Rod Evans now holds world cycling records in the 100 mile, 200 mile, 12 hour, 24 hour and 1,000 kilometre endurance events.
