Melville Senior High School and Kardinya Primary School are to receive refurbishments to their administration facilities.

Education Minister Norman Moore announced this week that the two schools would be among seven included in a $1.5 million administration upgrade program for the current financial year.

Mr Moore said the largest project would be at Melville Senior High School, which would receive a $450,000 upgrade to bring its staff facilities into line with new schools of the 1990s.

Improved office accommodation would be provided for the principal, deputy principal and registrar, as well as an enhanced reception area, extra storage space, bigger staff room, new staff toilets and sickbay.

Local MLA Doug Shave and Clive Griffiths, MLC, said they were delighted that these two schools were to receive refurbishments, particularly Melville Senior High School which had been requiring attention for a considerable number of years.

"The school has been a top priority each year since 1991.  I have been fighting for these much-needed refurbishments ever since I was first elected," Mr Shave said.

"The provision of the funding is an excellent example of the current Government's commitment to improving and maintaining our schools, which were sadly neglected under the State Labor Government."

At Kardinya Primary School refurbishments in keeping with the school's administration needs would be undertaken at a cost of $170,000.

Planing and Heritage Minister Richard Lewis, and Member for Applecross, said plans for the upgrade to Kardinya would provide for much-needed administration facilities at the school.

Architects would be appointed for both projects as soon as possible.  It was hoped that planning could be started before the end of the school year.

Tenders would be called early next year and work started before the end of the financial year.
