- State-of-the-art facility delivered by the Cook Government as part of $269.4 million expansion of Joondalup Health Campus
A world-class, multi-million dollar Mental Health Unit (MHU) has opened at Joondalup Health Campus, providing additional mental health services for people living in Perth's northern suburbs.
The new MHU has more than double the capacity of the existing facility at the hospital and will provide services to all age groups.
It has four times the floor space of the previous unit and includes 102 individual patient bedrooms with large, picturesque windows and soft furnishings in calming colour schemes.
The wards have been designed to separately accommodate adult patients, youth patients (16-24 years) and older adult patients (65+ years).
The MHU, which will open in a staged approach, includes a Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit, which is a dedicated service to support those who are acutely unwell.
The impressive facility also includes several interior courtyard spaces which allow patients access to the outdoors and double as venues for recreation and therapy activities.
The unit has its own kitchen, which will serve patients in several shared dining spaces, multiple large and small lounge areas and two gymnasiums.
It is part of a bigger $269.4 million expansion of Joondalup Health Campus, co-funded by the State and Federal Governments, including $111.4 million provided by the Cook Government.
Comments attributed to Premier Roger Cook:
"This state-of-the-art mental health facility is just one of many new projects we have funded as part of the Government's record investment in health and mental health services.
"It has more than double the capacity of the existing facilities in Joondalup and, importantly, it will mean that for the first time youth and adult mental patients requiring inpatient mental health care in Perth's northern suburbs can be treated close to home.
"The modern, thoughtfully designed facility will meet the requirements for the safe and secure treatment of people requiring mental health care and deliver patient areas that enhance care and wellbeing."
Comments attributed to Health; Mental Health Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson:
"The impressive new Mental Health Unit at Joondalup Health Campus significantly increases mental health beds in our northern suburbs, while ensuring patients get access to best practice care.
"It features a dedicated recovery hub where patients will be able to connect with community groups and peer supports.
"An education room is also available to support youth patients to stay engaged with their schooling, to minimise interruption to their daily life."
Comments attributed to Joondalup MLA Emily Hamilton:
"This new unit is an important addition to public health facilities in our community and boosts mental health supports for young people, which is something I have advocated for.
"It delivers a world-class, highly therapeutic environment that will provide care for people when they need it the most."
