South Korean renewable energy leaders set sights on Geraldton
- Cook Government enters exclusive negotiations with renewable energy proponent at Narngulu Industrial Estate in Geraldton
- First green ammonia plant to be built in Western Australia
- International investors are attracted to the Mid-West region's vast renewable energy potential, generating jobs and economic prosperity for Western Australia
In a first for Western Australia, the Cook Government has commenced an exclusive negotiation period with a major South Korean renewable energy consortium, to establish a green ammonia plant near Geraldton.
Progressive Green Solutions, in partnership with Samsung C&T and KOMIPO (Korean Midland Power Co), are proposing to build a plant on two lots, at DevelopmentWA's Narngulu Industrial Estate.
The facility is expected to produce up to 1 million tonnes of green ammonia per annum using renewable hydrogen.
It is expected to help support the decarbonisation of power generation assets in South Korea, with first shipments expected in 2027.
The Cook Government, through DevelopmentWA, brokered a land use solution to accommodate the project at Narngulu Industrial Estate paving the way for a new renewable energy cluster in Geraldton to complement the planned hydrogen hub at Oakajee.
Located 12-kilometres southeast of Geraldton, Narngulu Industrial Estate is an important general industrial precinct for Geraldton and the Mid-West region.
Comments attributed to Lands Minister John Carey:
"Our Government is committed to de-constraining land for WA's renewable energy sector in the Mid-West region and across the State to deliver new jobs and diversify our economy.
"The strategic location of Narngulu has attracted local and foreign investors who are looking to utilise its proximity to key industrial areas and transport links including Geraldton's port.
"Through strategic planning, we've been able to attract interest in our regions through making industrial land available to build businesses for the future.
"The work being done by our Government, through the Industrial Lands Authority, ensures we are ready to meet that demand."
Comments attributed to Energy Minister Bill Johnston:
"Western Australia is perfectly positioned to provide the land, infrastructure and skills required to develop large scale renewable hydrogen and green ammonia projects.
"With its exceptional renewable energy resources, the Mid-West is attracting significant global interest and investments from markets such as South Korea, Japan and Europe, seeking to support the decarbonisation of their economies.
"Projects such as this are also expected to unlock significant local manufacturing and jobs in the Mid-West."
Comments attributed to Geraldton MLA Lara Dalton:
"The interest from international proponents in establishing renewable energy projects in Geraldton validates the renewable potential of the Mid-West region and highlights Western Australia's exciting role assisting with global decarbonisation.
"We look forward to growth in the renewables sector across Western Australia leading towards a better, decarbonised future."
