Safety to be improved at busy Picton intersection
- Roundabout to be built at South Western Highway and Vittoria Road
- Installation of roundabout will improve road safety, access, and traffic flow
- Part of the State Government's commitment to improving infrastructure in our regions
Construction of a roundabout at the busy intersection of South Western Highway and Vittoria Road in the State's South West is another step closer, with construction works now underway on site.
Funded by the State Government, the roundabout's design will improve road safety by creating an overall slower environment on approach to the intersection, helping to address community concerns regarding speeding.
The $9.45 million upgrade also includes the installation of a dedicated right-turn movement from Vittoria Road onto South Western Highway, and a dedicated left-turn lane onto South Western Highway from Vittoria Road.
Recognising the importance of the natural environment, Main Roads have sought minimal environmental impact throughout the design and development process, with landscaping including the use of vegetation native to the area.
Aboriginal Heritage Surveys have been undertaken, along with consultation and approval from Traditional Owners.
Expected for completion in May 2024, the project will result in improved traffic flow and better access, reducing driver frustration and risk-taking behaviour.
Comments attributed to Transport Minister Rita Saffioti:
"The State Government is continuing its important investment in Western Australia's regional areas, to deliver improved road infrastructure where it is needed the most.
"The delivery of a roundabout at this intersection will help to reduce driver frustrations and risk-taking by motorists.
"We've listened to the community and noted their concerns about speeding vehicles, so the construction of a roundabout will also encourage drivers to slow down on approach to the intersection."
Comments attributed to Bunbury MLA Don Punch:
"I know the safety of this intersection has been a concern for many people in our local community, which is why our Government is getting on with the job of fixing it.
"The installation of a roundabout will enhance safety by improving the flow of traffic and slowing vehicles down on approach to the intersection.
"This roundabout will be particularly welcomed by the Glen Iris community who have long called for improved, safer road access in and out of their suburb."
