A mix of innovation entrepreneurs, academics, investors, consultants and business owners have been appointed by the Cook Government as the founding members of Western Australia's inaugural Innovation Advisory Board.

Minister for Innovation and the Digital Economy Stephen Dawson MLC announced the Board's membership, saying it had been an extremely competitive process with 11 people chosen from more than 160 expressions of interest.

Mr Dawson said each member brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the table which will be used to advise and assist the State Government on a range of innovation related initiatives.

Representatives from the diverse cross section of WA's fast growing innovation ecosystem also include regional, Indigenous, female, corporate and youth to provide a range of independent voices.

A key role of the new Board is to provide strategic advice to the Minister on the implementation of the State Government's 10-year Innovation Strategy and the effectiveness of its programs and initiatives.

The Innovation Strategy was developed following consultation with more than 600 members of WA's innovation ecosystem.

It outlines a decade-long vision for WA to become a global centre of invention, investment, innovation and impact.

Each member of the Innovation Advisory Board will serve a two-year term with the first meeting of the board set to take place in October this year.

Comments attributed to Innovation and the Digital Economy Minister Stephen Dawson:

"WA's exciting innovation ecosystem is thriving and continues to grow from strength to strength with increased international interest on what we're doing here.

"The Cook Government is keen to capitalise on this and make WA a global hub for innovation, research, investment and impact. This new Innovation Advisory Board will provide the insights and strategic advice to Government to make this a reality.

"Congratulations to our new Board members who have made it through a highly competitive selection process to win a seat at the table.
