Perth will play host to the 45th Australia-Korea Business Council (AKBC) and Korea-Australia Business Council (KABC) Joint Meeting over the next three days, helping to boost trading opportunities between the two countries.
The AKBC and KABC Joint Meeting is a flagship event in the Australia and Korea bilateral relationship, providing an opportunity for business, academia and government representatives to deepen their engagement and establish new partnerships.
Australia and the Republic of Korea have alternated hosting the event each year since its inception in 1978. The event was last held in Perth in 2006.
The WA Government was successful in its bid with Business Events Perth to host the 45th AKBC and KABC Joint Meeting.
Premier Roger Cook attended the 44th AKBC and KABC Joint Meeting in Seoul during his invest and trade mission to South Korea in 2023.
The 2024 event will see Premier Roger Cook sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), on behalf of the State Government with Inkyo Cheong, Minister of Trade for the Republic of Korea, on behalf Korea's Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE).
This MoU is an elevation of the Letter of Intent signed in January 2023, aiming to enhance cooperation between the Western Australian Government and MOTIE in the areas of clean energy development and processing.
In 2023, South Korea was Western Australia's third largest trading partner, with $18.1 billion of goods traded.
Comments attributed to Premier Roger Cook:
"Western Australia and South Korea have a strong economic relationship which supports local jobs across the State.
"We see real opportunities to grow our trading partnership, as part of my plan to position WA as a global renewable energy powerhouse.
"It is a privilege to be able to host the annual AKBC and KABC Joint Meeting, to progress new opportunities between our regions and put our State on show for the visiting delegation."
