  • Grants of $5,000 available for every eligible pre-service Education Assistant
  • Applications now open for 2024 school year

Grants of $5,000 are being offered to support Education Assistants (EAs) working in public schools that cater for the unique educational and personal needs of children with disability.

The initiative aims to strengthen the number of future teachers in Western Australia's public schools who have valuable experience supporting students with complex and special education needs and is available to those who are enrolled in the final year of a teaching qualification.

To be awarded the grant, pre-service teachers must have an education assistant employment contract in public school education support settings in 2024.

The Cook Government has announced a comprehensive review of the School Education Act 1999 to strengthen disability support for students.

The Government has also committed to a $2.26 million trial of 16 Complex Behaviour Support Coordinators to help school leaders address the needs of students.

EAs seeking further information about the grant, eligibility, or how to apply are encouraged to contact the Department of Education on 9264 4832 or ProfessionalPrac@education.wa.edu.au

Comments attributed to Education Minister Dr Tony Buti:

"Our Government is committed to ensuring students have access to a high-quality education no matter their circumstances.

"Education Assistants have a very important role to play to ensure that children with unique learning needs are offered the individual educational programs and personal support they need.

"This grant will help retain EAs in education support settings while they are completing their studies to become a teacher, helping them make the transition to teaching while continuing to contribute their valuable knowledge and experience in the classroom."
