Joint media statement - Disaster assistance activated for heavy rainfall and associated flooding in the Shire of Northampton
Disaster recovery funding has been made available to the Shire of Northampton after heavy rainfall and flooding impacted the region earlier this year.
A cold front moved through the Mid West of Western Australia on 26 June 2024, bringing with it a line of heavy showers and thunderstorms to the area which washed out floodways and caused significant damage to local roads.
The Albanese and Cook Governments have activated the jointly funded Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements Western Australia (DRFAWA) to support recovery.
This support will mean roads and other assets can be repaired, with secured Commonwealth and State reimbursement for eligible costs.
Quotes attributable to Federal Minister for Emergency Management Jenny McAllister:
"I'd like to commend the work of first responders and the local workers who have been working hard to help clean up their community.
"The Albanese Government is working closely with the Cook Government to make sure that the roads and assets are repaired quickly, without creating a financial burden on the local government."
Quotes attributable to Western Australia Emergency Services Minister Stephen Dawson:
"Severe weather and flooding events such as this can often have significant impacts on local infrastructure and road networks.
"The activation of the DRFAWA will ensure the Shire of Northampton receives vital support from both Commonwealth and State Governments to deal with the impacts of this event.
"DRFAWA funding will provide essential assistance to the Shire as it undertakes repairs to damaged roads."
