An invitation to develop a new hotel in the heart of Port Hedland has attracted a range of exciting proposals from both Western Australian and interstate developers.
Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan said feedback to the Request for Proposal (RFP) process, which closed on Monday, would be assessed by an independent selection panel, with the preferred tenderer to be announced in October.
"The high calibre of these submissions gives us confidence that Hedland is on track to receive the tourism and hospitality infrastructure it deserves," Ms MacTiernan said.
"Such a landmark facility would encourage the redevelopment of the Port Hedland town centre and sites, such as the current hospital, which is due to be replaced in 2011."
The Minister said the opportunity to develop a premium quality hotel and short-term serviced accommodation on a 2.8ha former primary school site had attracted strong interest since the RFP was issued in May 2007.
More than 20 potential developers attended a briefing held by LandCorp in June.
Central Kimberley-Pilbara MLA Tom Stephens said the creation of a distinctive building suited to the Pilbara would boost Hedland's image as a major regional centre.
"As well as an attraction for business and tourist visitors, the facility will also become an important part of community life," Mr Stephens said.
"Along with promoting a positive image to visitors, the new hotel development will add more diversity to the Hedland lifestyle, helping our community prosper and making it a great place to live as well as work."
Ms MacTiernan said the selection panel included architect Peter Hobbs, chairman of the Rottnest Island Board, Laurie O'Meara and representatives of the Town of Port Hedland, Tourism WA and LandCorp.
The panel would consider building design, sustainability initiatives in areas such as energy and water use and the developer's ability to deliver the project within the timeframe required.
The hotel site is located on the south-west corner of Sutherland and Acton streets in Port Hedland, next to the existing hospital, with views of the Indian Ocean.
