Developers sought for high quality Port Hedland hotel
15/6/07
The construction of a new oceanfront hotel in Port Hedland is one step closer with about 20 potential developers attending a briefing on the proposed development yesterday.
Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan said the State Government was committed to addressing the accommodation shortage in the Pilbara through the development of land for a quality hotel.
"Visitors and workers in the town are often finding it impossible to book a hotel room as one of the town's few hotels has been purchased for contractor accommodation," Ms MacTiernan said.
"In response, the State Government has identified an oceanfront site next to the existing hospital."
LandCorp is now seeking proposals from interested parties for the development of a high quality hotel and short-term serviced accommodation on 2.87ha site in the centre of town.
The Minister said considerable interest was expected from local and national developers keen to meet the high demand for accommodation.
"We are seeking proposals for a development with architectural style suited to the Pilbara that also incorporates innovative solutions to energy and water use," she said.
"This hotel development will set the standard for future redevelopment in the town which includes plans for a marina, new regional hospital and a multi-purpose sports facility, as well as smaller mining and port developments."
Proposals will be assessed on building design, sustainability initiatives and the developer's ability to deliver the project within the required timeframe.
Submissions close at noon on Monday, August 13.
