Community has its say on Perry Lakes renewal
9/6/06
A study on local community attitudes towards the redevelopment of Perry Lakes stadium has been jointly released today by Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan and Sport and Recreation Minister John Kobelke.
More than 450 people responded to the random telephone survey, with their ideas summarised in the latest report.
Conducted during March and April, the survey marked the start of the community consultation activities considered vital to the success of the Perry Lakes redevelopment project.
Participants were asked 40 questions to discover their views on each of the key components of the project.
Ms MacTiernan said the survey was conducted to establish how the community would like to be engaged during the renewal project and to identify the desired outcomes for the project's new sporting facilities and residential estate.
The Minister said those interviewed supported the environmental sustainability initiatives for the redevelopment as set out under the Perry Lakes Redevelopment Act 2005.
"Participants overwhelmingly supported the controls we have placed on the Perry Lakes site to ensure it becomes a model development in conserving water and energy," she said.
Almost everyone interviewed (98.7 per cent) believed that the new land development should be waterwise and 95.2 per cent said energy efficiency was imperative, advocating the incorporation of solar passive principles such as lot orientation.
"Many participants also wanted to ensure the history of Perry Lakes was remembered through the residential subdivision, with most believing street names were an ideal way to acknowledge its past uses and associated sporting stars," Ms MacTiernan said.
Mr Kolbelke said he, too, was pleased with the community's understanding of the importance of environmental sustainability, with 97.3 per cent of survey participants agreeing the new sporting facilities should be as energy-efficient as possible.
"Overall, the people surveyed were supportive of the initiatives the State Government has put in place for the development of the sporting facilities," he said.
"However, they want them designed to enable sporting groups to share the infrastructure with one another.
"The majority of concerns about the development of the sporting facilities centred on parking and traffic flow - issues which project experts were already addressing."
The three new sporting facilities, being developed by the Department of Sport and Recreation propose:
- an athletics stadium with a 2,000 seat grandstand and grassed banking for up to 10,000 spectators, office accommodation for AthleticA and the capacity to stage State and national level events;
- an eight-court basketball facility with office space for local clubs and Basketball WA; and
- a rugby facility incorporating a grandstand, office accommodation for Rugby WA and training facilities for the Western Force team.
The new sporting facility is expected to be completed by early 2008, with the residential development starting later the same year.
Ms MacTiernan said she believed LandCorp had the ideal credentials to manage the redevelopment of Perry Lakes.
"LandCorp's previous developments, such as the multi-award winning Harvest Lakes estate, has demonstrated its ability to successfully incorporate key sustainability objectives within a land development," she said.
The Minister said following on from the survey, community members who would like to have their say on the redevelopment or gain a stronger understanding of the project could attend an Open Day on Saturday, June 17.
The Open Day will be held from 10am to 2pm at the Perry Lakes Stadium athletics track, where project officers from both LandCorp and the Department of Sport and Recreation will be in attendance.
