First homebuyers and people on lower incomes in Geraldton will have the chance to purchase their own homes when five affordable houses are released for sale next month as part of the State Government's New Living Program.
Housing and Works Minister Michelle Roberts said two houses in Spalding, two in Utakarra and one in Karloo would be offered within a price range of $160,000 to $220,000.
"These affordable properties will enable several Geraldton residents to fulfil their dream of living in a home of their own," Mrs Roberts said.
"The homes which will be offered for sale have all been upgraded to include renovations to interior rooms and outside garden features, making them attractive places to live in.
"The New Living Program, which is the largest urban renewal initiative in Western Australia, has been highly successful in improving housing, amenities, streetscapes and living standards around the State."
The Minister said the program aimed to make public housing indistinguishable from private housing.
The refurbishment of homes usually included interior and exterior painting, fencing, landscaping, roof restoration, kitchen and bathroom improvements, floor coverings and carports.
Geraldton MLA Shane Hill said the New Living program was bringing huge benefits to the region.
"The New Living program is extremely positive as it redevelops older public housing estates to create more attractive living environments," Mr Hill said.
"It also encourages home ownership by offering properties for sale which are very affordable and perfect for the first home buyer.
"I encourage Geraldton residents to take advantage of the initiative."
In 2003, the State Government extended the New Living program to include Spalding, Utakarra and Waggrakine.
The Geraldton properties are expected to be advertised locally on September 15 and 22, with the ballot being held on the September 30.
