New opportunities for beachfront accommodation in Busselton to boost tourism
Part of Busselton foreshore redevelopment, supported by Royalties for Regions
Busselton is transforming into a world-class holiday destination, with major works set to continue on its iconic foreshore.
Premier Colin Barnett and Regional Development Minister Terry Redman today announced a $10.5 million redevelopment of Busselton foreshore to deliver quality beachfront accommodation and tourism experiences.
Mr Barnett said the significant project would create a seamless landscape on the foreshore and provided a catalyst for long-term social, economic and cultural benefits.
"The South-West is Western Australia's most visited regional area and the redeveloped Busselton foreshore will create an attractive investment proposition for private hotel developers and generate a substantial economic stimulus for West Australians," he said.
"Visitation to the region will also be supported with the $59.7 million Busselton-Margaret River Regional Airport expansion project that will improve accessibility for interstate visitors.
"Busselton is also becoming a hugely popular cruise ship destination. By the end of 2015-16, the city will have welcomed seven cruise ship visits with more than 12,000 passengers plus crew. Nine cruise ship visits to Busselton are already confirmed for the future."
The $10.5 million redevelopment will include the development of three sites for tourism accommodation, the foreshore parade and extra parking spaces to accommodate the increase in visitors to the area. The large-scale venture complements other priority projects such as the refurbishment of the Busselton Jetty.
Mr Redman said the Royalties for Regions investment would create a focal point for tourists and locals, and strengthened the social and economic fabric of the entire South-West region.
"Improvements to the foreshore's infrastructure and amenity will increase opportunities to host and attract new events to the region. This is an exciting time for the South-West and will create a positive impact on the regional economy and encourage population growth through the commercial, retail, hospitality, tourism and related industries," he said.
The $10.5 million project was given $4.5 million from the State Government's Royalties for Regions Growing Our South initiative and $6 million from the City of Busselton.
