WA local government rewarded for financial management

Local Government Minister John Castrilli yesterday presented the Financial Management Awards of Excellence to three Western Australian local government councils which competed for the awards.

Local Government Minister John Castrilli yesterday presented the Financial Management Awards of Excellence  to three Western Australian local government councils which competed for the awards.

"It is extremely timely to present the awards for the 2006-07 financial year when the international focus is on cautious, prudent financial management," Mr Castrilli said.

"The world economic crisis gives these awards extra significance.

"The award presentations provide recognition to those at the local government level that have provided the most effective financial reporting throughout the 2006-07 financial year.

"From the world stage to the local council it is clear high quality financial reporting underpins effective financial management, which in turn contributes to long term financial sustainability.

"Financial sustainability has emerged as a key issue for many local governments, particularly in relation to long term asset management and provision of new infrastructure needed by local communities."

The Minister said that this year 23 local governments had participated and the award winners would serve as role models for local authorities across WA.

"Given the wide range of types of local governments across the State, three categories were presented, including small rural and country regional local governments; rural local governments; and metropolitan and country - city local governments," he said.

"Part of the review process for the awards involves assessing initiatives being undertaken by local governments to address their long term financial sustainability.  This includes the development of a long-term financial plan and asset management plan."

Mr Castrilli said a departmental committee was established to judge the awards, determine the procedural process and judge the finalists.

The award winners, who were presented with their awards at the Esplanade Hotel, are detailed below.
