Sevenoaks Senior College celebrates a decade of distinction
Sevenoaks Senior College - established in 2000 following the State Government's vision of an innovative school with strong industry, university and training links - celebrates its first decade of operation today.
Attending the celebrations, Education Minister Liz Constable said that Premier Colin Barnett - who was education minister when the college began operation 10 years ago - had been instrumental in establishing the school, which could now be seen as the forerunner of the Independent Public Schools initiative.
"The decision to appoint a board with strong business expertise and community perspectives was innovative at the time but that has now become the model of choice," Dr Constable said.
"The benefits of having strong industry and business links are evident, with Sevenoaks offering students the opportunity to complete some of their course work at Curtin University and with State Training Providers.
"All students, irrespective of whether they are bound for further study at university or training, or direct entry to employment, are encouraged to undertake some vocationally related studies.
"As a result of this and the high level industry links, Sevenoaks is a leader in the area of vocational education in schools."
The Minister said Sevenoaks Senior College had been named in the first intake of Independent Public Schools and currently had about 550 students enrolled.
