Pipeline helps secure Manjimup's water supply
- Pipeline to link Manjimup to Bridgetown Regional Water Supply Scheme now complete
The $29million pipeline linking Manjimup to the Bridgetown Regional Water Supply Scheme is now complete and ready for operation to secure the town's water supply in dry years.
Water Minister Terry Redman said the 49-kilometre pipeline was built on schedule, under budget and would have capacity to deliver up to four million litres of water each day to Manjimup Dam when needed.
Mr Redman said construction of the pipeline began late last year after long periods of dry conditions left local water storage levels at an historic low.
"After record low inflows into Manjimup Dam last year and the implementation of Stage 6 watering restrictions to the area, residents can now take comfort in knowing their future water supplies are guaranteed," he said.
"The pipeline will greatly improve the town's climate resilience and was delivered on schedule by the Water Corporation and key stakeholders including local shires, Western Power, the Conservation Commission, the Department of Water and the former Department of Environment and Conservation."
The Minister said it was expected the pipeline would be used to supplement Manjimup Dam whenever it is at or below 50 per cent capacity, depending on the season. The dam is currently at 24 per cent capacity.
Mr Redman thanked the Manjimup community for their efforts to save water after the lack of inflows to drinking water dams over the 2012-13 winter.
"More than 1,000 households and businesses in Manjimup did their bit to save water by taking part in the Water Corporation's H2ome Smart program," he said.
"These customers will experience the long-term benefits of having water saving products in their homes and the day-to-day behavioural changes they have learned through the program."
