Perth Waterfront named Elizabeth Quay
The Perth Waterfront precinct has been named Elizabeth Quay
New name recognises Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II's connection to WA
Fitting tribute following last year's Royal Visit for CHOGM and her Diamond Jubilee
The Perth Waterfront precinct has been named Elizabeth Quay in honour of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II during her Diamond Jubilee year.
Premier Colin Barnett said the name was a fitting tribute following the Royal Visit last year during the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM).
"More than 100,000 people came to see The Queen and His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh during the Big Aussie Barbecue on the Esplanade last year so it is only fitting that the area which is currently being transformed into an exciting and inclusive precinct for all West Australians should honour The Queen," Mr Barnett said.
"The name 'Elizabeth Quay' provides a tangible and significant link to our heritage while the Waterfront project itself is a demonstration of the State Government's commitment to embracing Western Australia's future."
The announcement comes ahead of the celebration of the first Western Australia Day next Monday.
"Perth is maturing as a city and developing an exciting identity while continuing to treasure its rich heritage," the Premier said.
Last month, Mr Barnett and Planning Minister John Day officially marked the start of construction on the $440million project which will transform 10ha of prime riverfront land into a vibrant, contemporary development, set around a 2.7ha inlet and connected by promenades and boardwalks.
Works to construct the inlet are scheduled to start in late 2012 with all the public realm and inlet works on track for completion in mid-2015.
