One-stop-shop for drug and alcohol treatment

People with drug and alcohol problems living in the Thornlie area will now have access to treatment closer to home at a one-stop-shop staffed by counsellors, doctors, nurses and psychologists.

  • $360,000 State Government contribution to fit out of new premises
  • Better access to medical and nursing staff for treatment and counselling

People with drug and alcohol problems living in the Thornlie area will now have access to treatment closer to home at a one-stop-shop staffed by counsellors, doctors, nurses and psychologists.

The new office, which has received $360,000 in State Government funding, was previously operated from two smaller offices in Gosnells and Cannington but is now merged into a refurbished, more modern premise in Thornlie.

Mental Health Minister Helen Morton said the relocation of the Southeast Metro Community Drug Service (SEMCDS), delivered through a partnership between Mission Australia and Next Step Drug and Alcohol Services, would ensure services were located in an area with the most need.

"The move to a new site in Spencer Road, Thornlie includes $360,000 in State Government funding contributing to the overall $525,000 fit out, and means staff and the majority of clients who visit the site will enjoy a larger and more convenient service," Mrs Morton said.

"Services include assessment, individual and family counselling, opiate and alcohol pharmacotherapies, withdrawal management and community based prevention activities."

The Minister said the development was part of a successful working relationship between Government and non-government organisations and brings the SEMCDS into line with similar services in the south and north metropolitan areas.

The SEMCDS is one of five metropolitan integrated alcohol and other drug services providing treatment and counselling support for people and their families.
