New domestic violence refuge for Busselton

Child Protection Minister Robyn McSweeney today announced Busselton's first family and domestic violence refuge which will offer support to women and children fleeing violence in their homes.

"Domestic violence is never acceptable and it affects people from all walks of life," Mrs McSweeney said.

"This new 12-room crisis service will be able to offer up to 35 women and children accommodation, if they are facing homelessness due to family and domestic violence or another life crisis.

"This is a new service for the South-West, but also could be made available to women who are fleeing domestic violence in the metropolitan area, as well as women with many children."

The Department for Child Protection recently released its Family and Domestic Violence Prevention Strategy to 2022 which has a strong focus on prevention and early intervention, victim safety, and perpetrator accountability in domestic violence.

The prevention strategy builds on the WA Strategic Plan for Family and Domestic Violence 2009-2013 and aligns with the National Plan to Reduce Violence Against Women and their Children 2010-2022.

"A shared vision across all levels of government and the wider community sector is needed to reduce the incidence of family and domestic violence in Western Australia and across the country," the Minister said.

"Family and domestic violence is a complex problem and through this strategy, the State Government is committed to working towards a long-term and integrated response to a serious social issue."

White Ribbon Day will be held on Sunday, November 25 to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.

Tomorrow in Albany, Mrs McSweeney will be taking part in a march against domestic violence.
