New Governor Stirling Senior High School a big step closer

Demolition of the old Governor Stirling Senior High School and construction of the new, state-of-the-art school is set to begin, Education Minister Liz Constable announced today.

Dr Constable said the $63million project, which would take two years to complete, was being designed to reflect the unique history and culture of the site.

"Situated on the banks of the Swan River in Woodbridge, the new school will have the latest technology and facilities, while also blending in with the natural landscape," Dr Constable said.

The new school includes a two-storey main building and the single storey Maali Centre, dedicated to Aboriginal student learning.

There will also be a food technology studio with a commercial grade kitchen, a dance and drama studio; a library; cafe; and basketball courts.

Other facilities include:

·        maths and information technology laboratories and resource centres

·        science and chemistry laboratories

·        design technology studios with mechatronics, technical graphics and woodwork studios

·        a health and physical education sports hall.

Finance Minister Simon O'Brien said the old school buildings would be demolished within a few weeks, following the signing of a $45.9million contract with Pindan Constructions for the building of the new facility.

"As the site is limited in its physical capacity, it has taken innovative planning to incorporate the many facilities in the design," Mr O'Brien said.

To allow for construction, staff and students have been relocated to two separate education campuses.  Students in years 8-10 are at Midland Primary School and students in years 11-12 are at Cyril Jackson Senior High School.

Additional transportable classrooms have been installed at these schools for 2011 and 2012.
