Meth Helpline supports users and their families

The Liberal National Government's new Methamphetamine Helpline and public campaign helped 160 callers to find support and treatment in its first week of operation.

Mental Health Minister Andrea Mitchell said the positive response to the service showed the Western Australian Meth Strategy was hitting the mark with its range of initiatives to address meth-related harm in the community.

"This confidential, free service is meeting a vital need for counselling, support and referral to treatment for meth users and their families," Ms Mitchell said.  

"The counsellors are specialists at understanding the impact meth can have and they provide a sympathetic ear and expert advice for those wanting help.

"We have received positive feedback from callers that they feel supported by someone who knows what they are going through and what they can do next.

"Callers feel they are not alone and that help is available."

The Minister said many people had also sought information from the Drug Aware website, with the 'Help' pages being the most visited section of the site.

The State Government's $14.9 million multi-pronged Meth Strategy includes funding for 60 dedicated withdrawal and residential rehabilitation beds, a specialist meth clinic and expanded school drug education, including resources for parents and pastoral care staff.
