Mental health unit started at Fiona Stanley (Video)
- Design principles to create healing and comfortable environment
- Innovative services to provide best care for metro, rural and remote patients
- Mental health unit will open with Fiona Stanley Hospital in 2014
Construction of the State's leading mental health care facility at Fiona Stanley Hospital officially started today, marked by a ceremonial concrete pour.
Mental Health Minister Helen Morton said the 30-bed purpose-built facility, including an eight-bed psychiatric intensive care unit and an eight-bed mother/baby unit, would promote a therapeutic environment instead of an institutional setting.
"When Fiona Stanley Hospital opens in 2014, it will support a first-class mental health facility, designed and equipped to meet the needs of its patients," Mrs Morton said.
"The mental health unit will operate 24/7 and offer comprehensive assessment and treatment for complex mental health conditions, providing clinics and psychiatric consultations to patients within the greater Fiona Stanley Hospital precinct and to other secondary hospitals in the south metropolitan area."
Every aspect of the design of the unit is patient-centric. There has been a strong focus on creating a comfortable, healing environment while ensuring the balance between privacy and safety.
Careful consideration has also been placed on balancing privacy and safety needs for both patients and staff at the mental health unit. Specific design elements throughout will encourage staff/patient interaction.
