Kalgoorlie-Boulder's Super Pit has mine life extended
Department of Mines and Petroleum final environmental approval today has extended the working life of the Super Pit in Kalgoorlie-Boulder until 2021.
Mines and Petroleum Minister Norman Moore said Australia's biggest pit mine was historically important and vital to the future of Kalgoorlie-Boulder.
"Kalgoorlie-Boulder exists because of gold mining, and the Super Pit is the backbone of the city," Mr Moore said.
"This expansion - the Golden Pike - is crucial to ensuring the pit's continued operation.
"KCGM (Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines), the pit operators, is required to meet stringent environmental requirements, approved today by the Department of Mines and Petroleum.
"The conditions were set by the former Minister for the Environment, following formal assessment by the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA).
"The company has demonstrated the same intention to the Department of Mines and Petroleum, to deliver a high standard of environmental performance.
"Close monitoring of noise and vibration, dust and air quality, and tailings and groundwater will occur throughout the pit's expansion.
"The pit is close to residential areas and every measure will be taken to ensure the impact of the expansion is kept to a minimum."
