The transformation of unused land into a thriving community garden and meeting place in a well-known public housing precinct is the subject of an innovative documentary launched today by the State Government.
Culture and the Arts Minister John Day said Harvest, an eight-part online series and social media project, followed the course of the Bentley Community Garden from an empty lot to the first harvest, and included personal stories and traditional recipes from the people whose lives had been touched by the gardens.
"It's exciting to see the winner of the 2011, $20,000 X|Media|Lab Development Award come to fruition and the Government is proud to be involved in a project that supports Western Australia's local creative talent and the community," Mr Day said.
"Crow media + communications and their creative team have gone from strength to strength with this project, with Harvest selected for commissioning by SBS Online in 2011, and then funded for production by ScreenWest.
"This support has enabled the creative team to bring to the public the inspiring efforts of Bentley's community gardeners, who have worked together to cultivate, cook and then share the fruit of their labours."
Housing Minister Terry Redman said the community garden was a major focus of the recent rejuvenation project at Brownlie Towers in Bentley.
"The Department of Housing undertook an extensive renovation of the Brownlie Towers between 2005 and 2010, which included a substantial commitment to community development in the area," Mr Redman said.
"The Bentley Community Garden now represents the hopes of the residents who invested so much time and effort into developing the gardens into a community meeting place."
