First public school in Alkimos opens

One of Perth's newest and fastest growing suburbs, north of the river, celebrated the opening of its first public school this morning.

Education Minister Peter Collier officially opened Alkimos Primary School, as more than 200 students from kindergarten to Year 6 settled into their state-of-the-art classrooms.

Mr Collier said although Alkimos was a new suburb, there was already a strong sense of community.

"I know parents played a significant role in choosing the name of the school, designing the logo, mottos and uniforms, and deciding on the type of specialist programs the school should run," he said.

The school buildings include five early childhood classrooms, 10 general learning areas, one inclusive education classroom, a library resource centre, arts and craft classroom, multi-purpose hard courts, an oval and cricket practice nets.

"This beautiful new school will support the growing number of young families flocking to the area," Mr Collier said.

Alkimos was named after a Greek merchant ship that was wrecked on the coast in 1963.

The wreck inspired the school's logo and motto - Strength in Unity.
