Coral Bay staff housing works start

Regional Development Minister Brendon Grylls today announced construction had started on the $17.

  • $17.375million Royalties for Regions total project funding

  • Project to provide 37 seasonal staff houses for up to 70 workers

Regional Development Minister Brendon Grylls today announced construction had started on the $17.375million Royalties for Regions-funded Coral Bay Seasonal Staff Accommodation (SSA).

The project will provide 37 seasonal staff houses for up to 70 workers in the Coral Bay area and take pressure off the currently limited choice of accommodation.

Mr Grylls said works on the SSA site in Coral Bay began on Friday November 4 and the building of houses to be transported to the site had also started in Perth.

"For some time, the town of Coral Bay has been in need of suitable staff accommodation to house seasonal workers, which will allow for future expansion of its tourism and permanent facilities," he said.

"At present, workers have no choice but to stay in tourist premises such as caravan parks and resort grounds, which are unsuitable and can be overcrowded.

"Once complete, this project will provide more accommodation options for workers and take the pressure off accommodation designed for tourists to the area.

"It is anticipated that the houses currently under construction in Perth will be moved to the Coral Bay site for installation from February 2012."

North West MLA Vince Catania said the land for the SSA site was leased by the State Government from the BAC Village Pty Ltd (BAC Village) and National Lifestyle Villages (NLV) was appointed the preferred proponent for the development in April 2011.

Mr Catania said that once completed, the SSA site would provide future development and employment opportunities for the local Aboriginal community.

Curnow Group has been contracted for internal and external project works and has engaged BAC Village in the civil works through staffing and the hire of equipment.
