City status for Shire of Roebourne

Local Government Minister Tony Simpson has given the Shire of Roebourne approval to change its name to the City of Karratha from July 1, 2014.

Local Government Minister Tony Simpson has given the Shire of Roebourne approval to change its name to the City of Karratha from July 1, 2014.

"This is a milestone day for the people and local government of this area, as it signifies a change in status from a shire to a city," Mr Simpson said.

The local government area covers towns including Karratha, Dampier, Wickham, Roebourne, Point Samson and Cossack.  The names of these towns will not change, only the name of the local government area.

The Minister has accepted the Local Government Advisory Board's recommendation for the name change and the Shire of Roebourne has been advised.

"This positions the local government area for the future, from its mining focus to a regional city and home for people and businesses wanting to take advantage of its strategic importance," he said.

The Shire of Roebourne has been preparing for the district to become a city since its population reached the designated 20,000.
