A new two-storey classroom building has enhanced the look of Bunbury Senior High School and expanded facilities for Year 7 students this year.

Education Minister Peter Collier and Regional Development Minister Terry Redman officially opened the new $5.5 million building this morning, made possible by the State Government's Royalties for Regions program.

"The expansion is essential to accommodate 164 Year 7 students who joined the school this year," Mr Collier said.

An Independent Public School since 2011, Bunbury has a variety of specialist courses including a music program that operates in the new building.

The building has four classrooms, an activity area, toilets and store rooms.

Mr Redman said educational opportunities were important considerations for families choosing to live in regional Western Australia.

"Regional students need to be provided with the same opportunity as those in the metropolitan area," he said.

"Through this investment, Royalties for Regions continues to build sustainable regional communities in WA."

The upgrade was part of a $229.6 million package to prepare for Year 7s making the move to high school, with Royalties for Regions funding providing $42.6 million.
