2012 marks 25 years of Red Nose Day

• Minister calls on all West Australians to get behind Red Nose Day

• 100 extra child health nurses to educate on risk of SIDS

Community Services Minister Robyn McSweeney wants all West Australians to cast aside their inhibitions and don a red nose to mark SIDS and Kids annual Red Nose Day.

The major fundraiser for SIDS and Kids, Red Nose Day this year celebrates its 25th year. Mrs McSweeney kicked off the donations with $5,000 from the State Government

The Liberal-National Government committed $58.5million to early childhood health care in this year's State Budget. This includes funding for about 100 extra child health nurses to assess newborns and consequently educate more parents on the risks of SIDS.

"The Government's $5,000 donation will go towards SIDS and Kids WA programs which assist Western Australian families bereaved through the loss of a child, as well as working towards preventing further deaths through education and research," the Minister said.

"SIDS and Kids WA provide vital services to WA communities and I encourage everybody to get behind the organisation tomorrow, whether it is wearing a red nose, doing something silly for sponsorship or donating directly to the organisation."

SIDS and Kids WA support families affected by Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, as well as running education programs and research to reduce the incidence of child mortality.

Red Nose Day started in 1988 and the concept of using a silly red nose to address a serious problem has captured the imagination of the Australian community.

"An estimated 7,500 Australian babies' lives have been saved since SIDS and Kids started educating the community with safe sleeping tips for babies," Mrs McSweeney said.

"I encourage all West Australians to dig deep tomorrow and support this vital cause."
