Jason and Emma Harding, private owners of Birchmont Homestead, Shire of Murray
Birchmont Homestead (Place Number 3113 in the Shire of Murray’s Local Heritage Survey) is more than just a family home. It represents the traditional form and roof shape of an 1860s homestead and is one of the earliest surviving residences in the Murray District. However, the home was in significant disrepair, with no doors or windows and deteriorated roof sheeting, allowing the elements to cause further structural damage.
Owners Jason and Emma Harding had a vision to restore Birchmont Homestead within three years, with the final goal being a comfortable, stylish and liveable family home. The restoration had four main challenges: roof repair, doors and windows, internal flooring, and plumbing and electrical services.
To maintain the characteristics and feel of an early European settlement, the restoration aimed to retain the aesthetics as much as possible but with some modern internal fittings and conveniences. With the heritage restorations now complete, the Harding family can embrace their restored home and enjoy their new lifestyle.
