Heritage Grants Recipients 2023-24

Annual Heritage Grants Program funds 28 conservation and interpretation projects.
Last updated:

Congratulations to the recipients of the 2023-24 Heritage Grants Program (the Program).

The Program awarded $1.221 million in conservation funding to 28 projects through two streams of funding — the State Heritage Grants (SHG) stream and the Community Heritage Grants (CHG) stream.

As part the SHG stream, seven recipients have been awarded funding for major conservation projects as they either support economic recovery and job creation, reactivate a heritage place, or provide for natural disaster mitigation.

Mead Homestead in Leda has been awarded $100,000 for extensive timber, masonry, and plaster repairs to the 1850s homestead. Currently leased to Peel Horsepower, the conservation works will assist in reactivating the place for use by people living with diverse abilities.

In Bassendean, private owners of Success Hill Lodge, will use the major conservation funding to undertake reconstruction and conservation works to the verandah. Built in 1896 and originally functioning as the Lockridge Hotel, the two-storey building has seen a variety of uses over the years providing aged care and health care until the 1990s. Now functioning as a residence, the grant will enable reactivation of this landmark place.

The CHG funding will support the National Heritage Listed, Dirk Hartog Island to design and install interpretive signage which will tell the unique story of the island including the occupation of offshore islands by Indigenous Australians, the site of landfall by Europeans, visitation by Dutch, French and English explorers and the range of industries which have operated there such as pearling and pastoralism. The project will provide visitors with an engaging and educational interpretation about island life.

Since its inception in 1997, the grants program has provided more than $25 million in funding to 860+ heritage projects, helping to conserve and celebrate our past.
