Future of Fremantle Place and Economic Vision

The Western Australian Government has endorsed a Place and Economic Vision to underpin the potential future redevelopment and transformation of Fremantle | Walyalup’s Inner Harbour precinct.

In 2021 the Western Australian Government appointed the Future of Fremantle Planning Committee to create a place and economic vision that could guide the future redevelopment of the harbour precinct. The Government’s plans to relocate container trades to a new container port in Kwinana by the late 2030s paves the way to redevelop the harbour and realise the Vision.

Extensive engagement over 12 months and involving more than 1,000 people and more than 150 hours of stakeholder interaction from community, industry and government helped to inform three draft scenarios to transform the port into a thriving global city.

Further community consultation on these three scenarios informed the preparation of the preferred Future of Fremantle Place and Economic Vision that imagines a 50+ year planning horizon. This Vision has been endorsed by the State Government.

The project site consists of 260 hectares, including 10 kilometres of river and ocean frontage. This is a rare, globally significant redevelopment opportunity, with the scale of the site comparable with significant international waterfront redevelopments including Barangaroo in Sydney and London’s Canary Wharf.

The Future of Fremantle Place and Economic Vision identifies opportunities to unlock the site’s unparalleled potential by transforming the harbour into a vibrant, contemporary, sustainable city expansion that complements the historic city of Fremantle.

The Vision proposes to create a place that embodies the spirit of Fremantle – resilient, adaptable, hard-working and welcoming – while also capturing the important cultural significance the area, Walyalup, has for Aboriginal people.
